Local pack is the results you see in a search that has the goal to show the top local businesses in Google. This used to be a 7-pack but is now a 3-pack. Not only is the local pack showing less businesses, but it’s also redesigned to fit more into what the mobile user sees.
The local 3-pack is reliant on a person’s location so competing for a spot in the new local 3-pack can be unrealistic. Those results are ranked depending on the nearness geographically to the searcher but there’s an option to view even an expanded array of businesses; and this is where the competition kicks in. Nowadays, people aren’t just picking the first option but instead searching for more information to make an educated decision.
I have been working with local businesses as a Local SEO specialist since 2010 and as a Google My Business Product Expert (formerly called Top Contributor) since 2016. I write about GMB suitable for most folks, business owners included.
When not working for clients, I volunteer with the local businesswomen’s network, volunteers on Google’s forum, and the Local Search forum.
Away from the keyboard I’m a very busy mother with two boys, nine chickens, two cows, three sheep, a cockatiel and a stupidly happy dog.
