Apple Maps – Make it Part of a Local Search Strategy

published: 10 June, 2015 · updated: 10 April, 2018

What if I told you there’s a little known way to make it easier for more than 2 million Aussies to find your business… And your competitors aren’t on to it yet.  And then I told you it takes only about 15 minutes of your time and no money, would you be be crazy enough to knock it back?

I sure hope not.

That little known thing is Apple Maps.

One of the most common things I do for local businesses is help them get found more easily online. I almost always get raised eyebrows when I mention Apple Maps. Yes, when it first came out it was shockingly bad. But Apple are getting their act together.  Apple maps now contains very similar functionality to Google Maps, including reviews from TripAdvisor.  Apple are taking local search seriously.

Now is the time to get your business listed in Apple Maps (or correct if it’s already there).

I’ll let the research explain why –

  • 88% of Australians own a smartphone 1
  • 46% of Australians own an iPhone2

top 15 smartphone apps 2017

While this chart shows US users, not Australian, it’s important to notice the ratio – just over half as many people use Apple Maps as use Google Maps.

So let’s do the maths.

  • 24,899,344 Australians at time of publishing4
  • 87% use the Internet 5
  • 88% can use a smartphone to go online
  • 46% use an iPhone
  • 29% use Apple Maps

If the stats are right, it means at least 2.24 million Australians are using Apple maps.

Want to know the best bit? Apple maps doesn’t cost you or your customers one single cent.
